hey nerds, check your networks for conficker

summary: Conficker (aka downadup) is a pretty sophisticated and widespread p2p-based worm / botnet that's about 10 million strong. no one knows what it's intended use is, but it's probably going to be used for stealing money, rigging elections, plastering the world with kitten posters, or ending the internet.
i'm just hearing about this one today
yeah its been out there for a while, but it's set to get a big update tomorrow, which is why everyone's scrambling to disable as many clients as they can.
how does it get on your computer, do you have to run a dumb .exe or allow a stupid plug-in or is it badass enough to do whatever it wants without even asking first?
Thanks kubuntu. i dont have to worry about win32 virus' or .exe shit anymore.
it does not need you to run anything, if you're directly connected to the internuts. however, if any computer that's on your local network gets infected, then it can directly connect to your junk. just get the latest MS updates (the patch has been out for quite a while) and you should be fine. if you do get infected, it blocks access to windows update + a lot of antivirus sites, and kills any processes associated with those kinds of programs. so i guess it's easy to tell if you're infected, just try to go to the windows update site. and there's a bazillion removal tools available, so we're good there.
I was up in D.C. this past week for my fellowship's annual conference. It turns out one of the new fellows is Virgil Griffith. Perhaps some of you are familiar with him, he's the creator of Wikiscanner for identifying corporations/groups that are editing their own wikipedia pages. He was also one of the co-conspirators in the Buzzcard/Blackboard hacking incident. Turns out he's also a pretty chill guy so it was rather interesting talking with him

edit: turns out he's already been mentioned on the 409 here (one of Mike's posts)
cool!
pujols. i forgot my admin password. i have a backup reg'ler ol user account, but its so depressing to be denied permission to update acrobat on your own computer :( . any ideas?
are you callin pebkac? ;)
I'm just saying the problem you're having is well defined and easily searchable :) I'll be happy to help if none of the google results are helpful
:'( i messed up on my website and I deleted my mySQL user. I would just add it back but its name was juams201_pnke1 and apparently you can only create a username with 7 characters???
auggghtpbthth
ok i'm screwed. would anybody take a crack at salvaging some files off of an sql db?

or does it work that way?
WTF is SQL?
FML
go to bed
you could try creating a user with name "pnke1", sometimes the prefix+underscore is added for you by the system.
you're a damned genius. that worked but its too late i already paid the 15 bucks to have the hosting peeps revert to a previous state. thanks tho ;D
booyah, sorry I didn't post it sooner :)
So, I was just checking my email, went to empty my spam folder on gmail...this voice starts saying something out of my speakers, something about Georgia Tech and Rednecks...no idea. I try to turn my speakers down, it kept getting louder. Turned them off, it kept going for a second, then turned off...Then my lamp came on next to my computer and then went off...What the hell just happened? I think someone sent me a haunted spam message.
Well that's really weird. your lamp is a touch lamp, so that part isn't all that peculiar.

Did you have any other tabs open? any windows that got popped under?
