if you kids are coming then i'll definitely want to go to the game; i didnt want to commit to tickets and then end up there by m'self when i could be drinking rum out of a frisbee :-)
I think that after last night's play that me and Steven have decided to just watch the game here. That and we were cheap and didn't want to buy overpriced tickets.
I'm curious, for those of you who watched the game on tv, was the first uga touchdown legit? or should the ball been called dead after the fumble, but before that guy picked it up and ran with it? uga conveniently didn't play the replay but once in the stadium.
From my small knowledge of football, I believe that it was not a dead ball because no one had possession until the guy pulled it from the pileup. But the Tech guys should have been more aware since the whistle had not blown the play dead.
From the screen, it looked like to me that the ball was pinned by a guy's hand against the ground and another's leg. which to me would mean that the ball was no longer rolling around and therefore dead (sort of like stopping a ball rolling around on a punt, it doesnt need to be pulled in, only stopped from rolling). and possession would go to whomever the hand belong to, but i cant find the video (that is drews responsibility anyway since i remember reading we were paying him the big bucks). also, what did the commentators think? (even though they tend to say 2 contradicting things at the same time, so that they are right and can always back up whatever the refs end up deciding).
i think the fumble was called as correct as possible. touching it like you described wouldnt count as downing the ball (punts and kickoffs are different), but whether or not someone actually had possession in the pile and the uga guy ripped it away from them i don't think we'd ever know.
I'll see if I can find some video, but if no one ever had possesion the ball is still live, which I guess was be the case. I propose 3 IR cameras be placed on the field and are used to extrapolate 3D images of dog piles on the football.
dont forget the x-ray emmiters and detectors!
I think there needs to be a football cam. But I thought on a fumble, if it is no longer bouncing around, but rather just lying on the ground still, once a player "secures" it and that player in on the ground, the ball is dead. and in this case, i thought i saw a player on the ground, reach over and grab the football that was pinned by a leg. he didnt bring it into his body, but it looked like he had a good grip as he was reaching out for it.
Reading the rules, all 200+ pages, it seems to all come down to whether the ball came to rest or not. if it didnt, then the play as called was correct, but if it did, the play is dead. so my guess is that there wasnt enough evidence to overturn the call on the field. so drew, get cracking on that video. i expect to have it within 48 hours. by the way, since i was the only gt fan in sight where i was, my opinion of the call was not appreciated.
coming to rest only applies to punts and kickoffs. a fumble is live until someone has complete control of the ball
Hate to be an ass, but according to the ncaa rules in the fumbles/live and dead ball section, i think around page 95, they describe dead balls on a fumble. they even have a crazy rule, where if a ball is fumbled and is at rest in-bounds and is not attempted to be picked up by a player, it is dead also.
something like "if a backwards pass or fumble comes to rest in-bounds and is not secured, the ball becomes dead and belongs to the passing or fumbling team."
something like "if a backwards pass or fumble comes to rest in-bounds and is not secured, the ball becomes dead and belongs to the passing or fumbling team."
and drew, i'm only giving you 48 hours because you of all people should know that if a crime isnt solved within 48 hours, it probably wont be. according to the tv
the exact quote is... "When a backward pass or fumble comes to rest inbounds and no player attempts to secure it, the ball becomes dead and belongs to the passing or fumbling team at the dead-ball spot."
but there WERE attempts to secure it ;)

Yes that is the quote i was talking about as far as the crazy rule goes. But to me (from the reading and i could be wrong), if the ball stops rolling and a player has the ball pinned to the ground with his hand while he is on the ground (sort of like michael vick after he stretches/fumbles) the ball is down. i'm not saying a simple touch will do, but if the ball is pinned beneath a hand, it should be whistled down for the ball is under control. but in my scanning of the rule book, i see nothing dealing with the proper way to secure a football or any dog pile rules.
there are too many rules, but one i find interesting is rule 9, section 3, article 2b "the runner shall not grasp a teammate; and no other player of his team shall grasp, push, lift, or charge into him to assist him in forward progress."
if i'm understanding that correctly, this rule is violated all the time. and that brings back memories to the usc/nd game last year where reggie bush charged into matt leinart as he attempted to sneak in the winning touchdown (and if you remember correctly, bush's push helped leinart on his second effort).
ok im done with rules. gonna wait for that video

yes, everyone knows that was an illegal move, but no one seems to care since it helped FUSC win. the announcers mentioned it during the FUSC/ND game this weekend and said "but who cares among friends?" another big FU to USC and their media and ref fan boys!
that game was incredibly hard to watch, not only cause ND was stinking it up, but also cause the FUSC band only knows one farking song and plays it after every damn play. had to put it on mute many many times
To throw in my two cents, from the replays I saw it looked like nobody ever really gained possession or even had the ball pinned down and I don't think it had completely come to rest. Originally I thought it had to be bullshit, but from the replays I couldn't really argue with the call.
