well matt, it's not just quantity, it's also quality of the output, and from what i can gather, apex isnt a very high quality power supply brand. but this is just for you budget box so it might be fine for a low stress application. antec on the other hand will be good for your high performance rig.

as for the tv dvi issue, it does have an HDMI connector, which can be attached to a DVI output, and most dual DVI cards come with a DVI->RGB connector anyway
oh and lol @ tom's = 3rd party
Excuse me, sir. Seeing as how the V.P. is such a V.I.P., shouldn't we keep the P.C. on the Q.T.? 'Cause if it leaks to the V.C. he could end up M.I.A., and then we'd all be put out in K.P.
idb?
HD deal on new egg -- 250 gb SATA 3 GB/s for $80 free shipping. i think i'm buying bought one.
my co-worker pointed out that it might be cheaper to go on dell for my new computer, since harris employees get a discount. so i went and spec'ed out a machine, and here's what i came up with.. i think i'll stick with buying on newegg:

btw the 19" monitor was free.. dell and their silly deals
"harris employees get a discount"

ORLY? Writing that one down.
So I've been browsing the AMD section, and I've selected an alternative to the Conroe business.. how does this one strike you guys?
i need to hurry up and graduate and get a real job makin big bucks so i can get some of that action
OK so i pretty much scrapped everything but the case and made a new system, which i'm about to buy on newegg:

Case

CPU

Mobo

Video

RAM

Edit: It's already been boughten
it makes me sad to think that i spent almost 300 for my athlon 64 3200 two years ago.

my 3200= socket 754, 2.0 ghz, single core

matt's = mine x 10 plus a personal geisha

pwnt by the market
I paid about $300 for my 3800 socket 939 2.4 ghz last May.

Matt's = mine x 3 + evening with Shawn's mom.
so that second part.. is that like a subtraction, or what?
alright so my new computer is freshly constructed. my case has sexy hard drive bays that have rubber grommets to keep vibration to a minimum. the case also has some lights on the front that are pretty cool. more details to come.
So I took off my clothes and put on my anti static wrist strap, and prepared for awesomeness. The cpu fell right into place, but the heatsink / fan was a little interesting at first. the little snap/latch that you have to flip to secure it down was pretty tight, and i didnt want to break anything.

everything else was pretty straightforward.. i had to swap out the plate on the back for the one that came with the mobo.. i had some trouble getting my hard drive into place because i didnt read the details in the case's instructions :-P my dvd drive is on spiffy sliders that will make it easy to take out / put back.. altho my dell case uses different sliders, so it wont be easy to swap back and forth.

i have a dvd of "Post Beta 2" windows vista, but it doesnt seem to work with my system (it just sits on the loading screen). i'ma put in my ubuntu dvd in there tonite and see if it makes any more headway.
woowoo, moved my new desk + computer into my bedroom.. and added a lil bit of extra goodness:

Unfortunately I dont have enough power cords to go around; I had to take the power cord from the second monitor so I could turn the image server back on :)
Ok, so here's what my cousin and I came up with:

Case

Motherboard

Power Supply

CPU

RAM

GPU (until DX 10 comes out, and then who knows...)

Monitor (we didn't really hunt around for a monitor, but we've been searching for about 6 hours)

I prefer Intel over AMD, only marginally though. It comes out to $1309 (That's dollars/fun) after shipping, but before mail-in rebates. Any suggestions/qualms?
monitor

i've got it and love it  its an 8bit monitor btw whereas that viewsonic is only 6bit
looks pretty hot -- is this for you, or your cousin?

Your mobo comes with SLI superpowers.. you might consider getting TWO gpu's (or perhaps FOUR gpu's) for a truly badass extreme machine. go big or go home.
The BenQ is pretty sweet. It also has much better pixel pitch, and it's obviously widescreen. The only thing the viewsonic has over it is response time: 2ms vs 8ms. Is ghosting an issue (see this also)?

I never justified why I prefer Intel over AMD, so here is what i've gathered so far. I feel that Intel's implementation of Quad-core is more efficient; AMD's Quad simply uses two processors, so if Matt wants to move to Quad, he'll have to buy a new mobo. The board I'm looking at supports Quad-core so hopefully upgrading in teh future will be smooth.

We made sure to look at boards that are SLI compliant. AMD/ATI have Crossfire, but my cousin claims that SLI has more support, and even out performs Crossfire in some cases. I have to look into that some more though. edit: Crossfire vs. SLI (I understand that AMD supports SLI too, but the Quad-core issue still stands).

I wanted to buy this card, but I want to wait for DX 10 to settle up before buying a killer card (or two, or four). Plus the price is ridiculous. My guess is that games won't be utilizing DX10 (which i think Microsoft is calling D3D 10) for probably another year or so.

This is for me. I'm only waiting on finding a better monitor before ordering.
