Drew: Gotta bail on ttowot...
acelxix:

ttowoNt?  next?

Drew:

13 Assassins - It's on netflix. So if  you want a samurai movie with less white people and more stylized action, this is for you. The level of intensity for things is constantly bordering on silly, but it manages to stay within acceptable levels for pretty much the whole thing. The bad guy is vilified so much you start to lose your suspension of disbelief, and the crazy samurai value system does the same thing to you. But the movie pulls you back in with something sincere and you're having a good time. How does it compare to The Last Samurai? The action in The Last Samurai was very visceral and sucked you in because it felt real. 13 Assassins action is much more about style with some aw hell yeah moments. There's even some special fx and borderline anime camera work. Not much, but it's there. But like I said, less white people (none actually) so that's cool. Would've made a great TT outing. 3.5 out of 5 target seeking incendiary ordinances.

so amber, steph, rachel, matt and I just won 5 tickets to see the screening of the new sherlock holmes movie at trivia tonight , w00t!  The tickets are for tuesday@7:30 at atlantic station, but no one wanted them so I have 5 now.  Anyone down?

p.s - I almost died on the drive home.  I was doing about 60 on the turn on Ponce right before that bridge.  I was like "oh shit" and started fish tailing towards oncoming traffic!! So i over corrected and started fish tailing the other way, oh shit! (luckily no one else was doing 60 so no one was next to me...).  So of course I overcorrected again and started fishtailing again towards more on coming tracking, shit shit!!  so I repeated my previous mistakes and car rammed into the curb on the last fishtail and I was able to regain control. *phew*  I lost my back right hub cab and the tire is scuffed, but no real damage to the car.  There was some a bit more vibration noticeable at highway speeds, but all in all I'm really fucking lucky.  If those first or third fishtails had gone on any longer I might've reverse T-boned a car and wouldn't be writing this post right now...

Anyways...tuesday's coming and I'm feeling fat and sassy!  So anyone down for a movie?

mwinter:

yowza.. fishtailin' like a boss.

I feel like I wasn't there for the part where my ticket was relinquished into the 5 tickets that are now available.. but I dont think I'm doing anything Tuesday.. so maybe I'm down? I'll consult google calendar

acelxix:

anyone else down?  new sherlock holmes screening tonight at 7:30.  I might make tacos tonight for anyone interested before hand.  Taco Tuesday's coming!  Did you bring a coat?

i feel like a giddy school girl. batman is my favorite hero and bane is my favorite villain. glad he is getting the nolan treatment to redeem what schumacher did in b&r

acelxix:

Was that the bat mobile in desert camo?  Oh snap!  Seems like someone got to Lucius.  I'm excited!  I haven't been let down by Nolan yet.

edit:  I only know bat man from the original cartoon, and I don't remember bane playing a big role in it.  Mr.  Freeze is definitely my favorite villian from that show.  Hopefully there's a 4th in the future, because schwarzenegger for mr. freeze?  srsly?  i wouldn't mind seeing the kaiser, Kevin Spacey play mr. freeze.

I read this book when I was younger. I recommend it. I'm gonna re-read it before the movie comes out.

mwinter:

I think you put this in the wrong thread

scott:

it was a mulatto post. anyway, might want to check out this vid too before it gets pulled

Drew:

Girl with teh (a?) Dragon Tattoo - I haven't read the books so I went in just knowing that Daniel Craig was in it and some emo chick was going to help him solve mysteries. Now that I write that I'm kind of disappointed it wasn't a gritty Scooby Doo reboot. I'm not really into mystery flicks to begin with so I can't really compare this to others of the genre, but I would think that during the story the viewer should be seeing clues that point to the whodunnit character. The big aha moment should come with a payoff that validates those clues and makes sense of the whole thing. A real good movie would have all those things make sense at a specific time. When the whodunnit is revealed I was like, huh OK whatever. It could have just as easily been any other character or some deus ex whodunnit character they just made up. The bad guy had a mildly interesting monologue as bad guys are wont to do, but the movie doesn't really take the topic it raises about our compulsion to not offend anywhere. And then the mystery is solved through a deus ex swedish lady out of a hat trick that could have just as easily been anyone else. That's two deus exes in the same movie, Dos deus exes. If they were having beers they would be dos deus exes drinking dos dos equis. The interactions between the Craig character and the emo girl were the most interesting parts of the movie. But overall I found the experience bland. That's probably why they felt the need to be explicit with the rapey scenes, because you wouldn't really feel anything during the movie otherwise. 2.5 out of 5 what was that shiny thing and where is it going oh now I get its.

ezmac102:

definitely one of those where you need to read the books.  although michael saw the movies without reading the books and really liked the movie.  also the rapey scenes was much more graphic in the book.  they toned it down.  they did a good job turning the book into a movie, but like most, i feel the books are better.

acelxix:

Agreed, the movie definitely makes more sense having read the book, but I think they did a good job of capturing the essense of the book.  They had to leave out some details to make the story flow and without it being 3:30 hours long. [SPOILER ALERT]  If you plan on reading the book or watching the movie then stop here.

For example, the end of the movie seemed a little rushed to me.  They don't do a good job of explaining Anita and Harriet's situation, which is handled much better in the book (and moderately more believable).  There was also a whole side story about a Wennestrom mole at Millenium who was sabotaging the magazine, which makes the vindication of sticking it to the corrupt CEO even more satisfying in the book.  One thing they did pretty well is make the research a little more interesting.  It seemed more laborious in the book, which is how research is I guess, but they did a good job of capturing the details from the book without drawing it out.

I get your point though Drew.  There wasn't a montage scene of flashbacks where it's like "Oh yeah, if I had picked up on those clues I would've solved the mystery!"  But it's like that in the book too.  The only thing that's a little different is that when Martin confronts Mikael in the book, he basically tells Mikael to leave the island or MIllenium might be in trouble (since Vanger falls ill and Martin is the representing partner for the magazine).  Martin uses the family's distaste of Mikael's presense as a pretext for the conversation in the book, so it's not so obvious at the time, but that's definitely one of those "oh yeah" scenes.  I think the "oh yeah" montage would've been super cliche, but I can see your need to connect the villain with context demonstrated in the movie.

Casting was done fairly well.  Rooney Mara played a perfect Lisbeth.  I was opposed to the idea of Daniel Craig because of his 007 fame, but they do a good job of toning him down and show some wrinkles from aging, so it worked.  In my mind Wennestrom seemed more like Bernie Madoff, rather than the younger pretty boy they chose in the movie.  He had white hair, but smooth skin. Maybe my mind just falls into standard stereotypes and makes the villains hideous with boils and such. :)

Anyhow, I give it a 3.5/5 shit shit the killer's standing right next to you and you know it, just stab him with the knife!!

Oscar:

The Swedish movie was better. And the mystery spans the three part series, so that may be why the whodunnit seems underwhelming. If you have amazon prime (if you don't, get it cause it's awesome but fair warning - it might make you spend all your money at amazon), they have all three Swedish versions (both subtitled and dubbed) streamed for free.

mwinter:

Guilty pleasure, anyone?

Drew:

hm, hope it doesn't suffer from trailer=whole movie syndrome
